Health Insurance is in California is getting ready for a major change. The main provisions of the Affordable Care and Patient Protection Act that was passed by congress and signed into law by President Obama is taking effect January 1 2014. This means major changes to health insurance in California.

Baxter Insurance is here to help navigate our clients through these major changes:

Individual health insurance-

The State of CA is opening a health exchange 01/01/2014. Our office is in the process of becoming an agent to write plans through the exchange. We can help you write your health plan at no extra cost to you. Plans will be sold in this exchange by 13 different insurance companies. There will only be four health plans sold in the exchanges- Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze are the names of the health plans. You can buy any of these four health plans from the insurers that are writing in your geographic areas. Some people will be eligible for premium subsidies from the government, while others will not be eligible for premium subsidies. Your eligibility for subsidies will be based on your household income and the number of people in your family. If you want an estimate to see if you qualify for subsidies you can do so here>>

Do I have to buy my health insurance through the CA Health Exchange?

No. You do not have to buy your health plan through the state exchange. Private health insurers like Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of California will also be selling health insurance plans outside of the exchanges. If you buy your health plan outside of the exchange you will not qualify for any subsidies, but many people will not qualify for subsidies in the first place. Baxter Insurance will also continue to sell health plans outside of the exchange as usual, at no extra cost to our clients.

Can I keep my existing health insurance plan?

If you purchased your health insurance plan before March of 2010, then you are able to stay on your existing individual health insurance plan. If you purchased your health insurance plan after March of 2010, then you will need to transition to a new Affordable Care Act compliant health insurance plan. Either your existing insurer will offer you a new health plan that is compliant, or we can help write you on a new compliant health plan.

What are the major dates?

Open enrollment for the new individual health plans in CA will commence 10/01/2013 to secure 01/01/2014 policy effective dates.
